The Stillroom Scientist is rooted in more than tradition. It's built on a foundation of scientific knowledge, careful methodology, and an ongoing commitment to understanding what truly goes into the products we use every day.

My background is in botanical research with formal training in molecular biology, experimental design, and laboratory processes. This work requires precision and careful documentation alongside a deep understanding of scientific methods. I bring that same mindset into every product I create.

Why Formulation and Ethics Matter

Each product begins with formulation. I study raw materials, review safety data, and evaluate how ingredients behave in use. This approach allows me to balance historical stillroom craft with contemporary practices to create work that is thoughtful and reliable. All my products are vegan, cruelty-free, and developed with respect for both living beings and ecological systems.

Another issue I address is that many fragrance and personal care products contain ingredients with long-standing safety concerns.

One common group of chemicals, called phthalates, are often used to help fragrances last longer. Some phthalates are linked to reproductive and developmental effects. Other regulated compounds include those listed under California’s Proposition 65 law, which identifies substances associated with potential long-term health risks. For this reason, both classes are restricted or banned in many parts of the world.

I choose to formulate without these chemicals, not as a marketing claim, but as a way to reduce unnecessary risk in products used every day.

The historical stillroom was part laboratory by necessity. Observation, experimentation, and practical knowledge shaped how goods were made.
